Portfolio > First Trimester Project

Within the First Trimester Project, I have documented a real-time response to my experience in the first trimester of pregnancy. As the typical symptoms of pregnancy and a time of redirected energy dramatically impacted my daily activity as an artist, I sought to uncover how pregnancy changed my mark-making activity. Much as we capture the braking energy of a vehicle and turn it into usable energy, my goal was to harness the necessary moments of rest that came within these early weeks of pregnancy. These marks were developed in a sketchbook, typically while lying down when other activity was not an option, and then developed further into larger scale drawings. I focused on my tendency to build up incremental marks to form a greater whole as well as the smudging that naturally occurred while drawing in a horizontal position. In retrospect, I see these time based marks as a language that even I cannot translate.
