Connect the Dots

I create compositions mimicking connect the dot worksheets for children that, when connected, produce no recognizable forms. Sometimes the enumerated dots fill the page and sometimes the works are made up of sparse groupings of dots. Connect the dots sheets are used to train a child’s fine motor skills, and to produce the moment of excitement when the final form is revealed from previously unreadable arrangement of dots. By using the framework to produce something meaningless, I’m foregrounding the specific structure of meaning-making itself as well as the viewer’s desire and even ability to find recognizable form regardless of my intention.
